Bring Jimmy Lai Home
Lai's fight for democracy in Hong Kong continues behind bars. His crime? Independent journalism. #FreeJimmyLai
A fight for freedom that led to prison.
Jimmy Lai is a pro-democracy campaigner and founder of Apple Daily, once one of Hong Kong’s most outspoken newspapers in defense of free expression.
His criticism of the Chinese government led to his arrest in 2020 under the National Security Law. After a 156-day trial, in which he testified for 52 days, Hong Kong’s High Court convicted Lai on charges of publishing seditious materials and colluding with foreign forces, ruling that he used Apple Daily to advocate international pressure on China.
Sentencing has not yet been imposed, with mitigation submissions scheduled for January 2026.
Lai’s case has become a global symbol of how national security laws are used to silence dissent and independent media. His children, Sebastien and Claire Lai, continue to campaign internationally for his release, and for accountability over the erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong.
